Emily Dickenson

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune--without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

Autobiography in 5 Short Chapters

by Portia Nelson

Chapter 1:  I walk down the street.  There is a deep hole in the sidewalk and I fall in.  I am lost; I am helpless; it is not my fault.  It takes me forever to find the way out.

Chapter 2:  I walk down the same street.  There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.  I pretend I don't see it.  I fall in again.  I can't believe I'm in the same place, but it's not my fault.  It still takes me a long time to get out.

Chapter 3:  I walk down the same street.  There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.  I see it is there.  I still fall in.  It is a habit.  But my eyes are open and I know where I am.  It is my fault.  I get out immediately.

Chapter 4:  I walk down the same street.  There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.  I walk around it.

Chapter 5:  I walk down a different street.

  If you think you are beaten, you are.

If you think you dare not, you don't.

If you like to win, but you think you can't

It's almost certain you won't.

 If you think you will lose, you are lost

for out of the world we find

Success begins with the thoughts in your head...

It's all in the state of mind.

 If you think you are outclassed, you are.

You've got to think high to rise...

You've got to be sure of the thoughts in your head

Before you can win any prize.

 Life's battles don't always go

to the strongest or fastest man...

But sooner or later the one who will win

Is the one who believes that he can
